Ready to restore lost facial volume? Experiencing the downward effects of gravity that come with age? Hoping to rejuvenate sagging skin without an overdone appearance?

Look no further than Sculptra Aesthetic.

Put simply, Sculptra by Galderma  is not your typical dermal filler.

Rather than simply adding volume with product like Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, Sculptra injections act as a biostimulator. That means they spark a gradual and natural process of stimulating your own collagen production.

As a result, Sculptra filler delivers subtle, long-lasting rejuvenation — powered by your skin’s own renewal abilities.

Sculptra FAQs

Sculptra is an injectable biostimulatory filler made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). FDA-approved since 2004, it addresses signs of aging in a subtle yet transformative manner.

Unlike traditional dermal fillers that add immediate volume, Sculptra works gradually by encouraging your body to produce new collagen — the protein that’s responsible for skin firmness and structure.

Unfortunately, as we age, we produce less of this essential building block of the skin. As a result of collagen depletion, our skin starts to sag and get lax.

A cascading effect occurs on the face — skin slides downward from the cheek and midface to the jawline, chin and into the neck.

That’s where Sculptra comes in to lift, tighten and define the contours of the face. Over a series of treatments, it helps to:

  • Restore lost facial volume to creases, hollows and folds
  • Diminish wrinkles and lines
  • Improve skin texture, including crepey skin
  • Rejuvenate the skin for a youthful appearance

Sculptra is ideal for treating areas of the face where age-related volume loss is most noticeable, including:

  • Cheeks and midface area / Cheek Hollows
  • Temples at the corners of the eyes / Temple Hollows
  • Jawline and lower face to restore sagging jowls
  • Smile Lines and Creases
  • Marionette lines and deep folds around the mouth and into the chin area
  • Nasolabial folds that extend from below the nose to the lips
  • Neck and Chest wrinkling
  • Chin dimpling and wrinkles / Chin Hollows
  • Areas of the body are considered off-label use including Sculptra for buttocks / butt area, often referred to as a “Sculptra BBL”

Note: Sculptra is not typically used for under eye or in the lips.

Each Sculptra treatment session typically takes 30–45 minutes.

We begin with a personalized consultation to assess your facial structure, volume loss, and aesthetic goals.

This ensures Sculptra is the right approach for your needs and allows us to map out a tailored treatment plan.

During treatment, your provider will cleanse the area and may apply a topical numbing cream for comfort.

Sculptra is then injected into the deep dermis at strategic points along the treatment area using fine needles or cannulas.

Sculptra requires a series of 2-4 treatments spaced a few weeks apart.

After this treatment schedule, you’ll enjoy a refreshed, youthful look that evolves naturally — without drastic changes overnight.

Filler results become visible in 4–6 weeks, with full collagen-driven results at 3–6 months.

Specifically, Sculptra benefits develop gradually over 6–12 weeks as your skin rebuilds its natural collagen.

Depending on your treatment goals and areas of treatment, you can expect Sculptra results including:

  • Restoration of volume loss in cheeks, temples, lower face and midface
  • Improvement in skin laxity and firmness
  • Reversing skin thinning for thicker skin
  • Softening of deep lines, folds, and wrinkles
  • Lifting, tightening and  firming of sagging skin
  • Adding volume to  sunken or hollow areas
  • Enhanced facial contour and definition
  • Improved skin texture and overall tone

In general, you will experience a refreshed, more youthful appearance—without looking overdone.

Sculptra results can last up to 2 years or more, depending on your age, lifestyle, and how your body metabolizes the product.

A maintenance session once a year may be recommended for optimal results.

Ideal candidates for Sculptra include those experiencing facial volume loss or early aging signs.

It is not recommended if pregnant, breastfeeding, with injection-site infections or for people with a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring (typically caused by acne).

Sculptra is a great choice for individuals who:

  • Want gradual, natural facial rejuvenation
  • Prefer subtle results over time
  • Are looking to address facial hollowing or sagging
  • Are committed to a treatment plan
  • Prefer a long-lasting solution to volume loss

Sculptra is often grouped with dermal fillers, but technically, it’s a biostimulatory injectable — not a traditional filler.

Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that add immediate volume by placing gel-like material under the skin, Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production over time.

Its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), helps restore facial volume gradually and improves skin quality from within.

So while the end result may be considered similar to an HA filler, Sculptra achieves it through a process of regeneration rather than replacement.

Types of fillers vary by their active ingredient as follows:

PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid)

This biocompatible, biodegradable ingredient is used in Sculptra. It’s been used in dissolvable sutures and medical devices for decades.

For cosmetic purposes, it’s used to stimulate collagen production. Rather than filling lines or hollows immediately, PLLA particles gradually encourage your skin to rebuild its own structural support.

This results in a natural, progressive restoration of volume and firmness over time.

The effects appear subtly and can last up to two years or more as your collagen network strengthens.

HA (hyaluronic acid)

This is the ingredient found in Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero Fillers. By contrast to PLLA, these dermal fillers provide immediate results by physically adding volume beneath the skin.

HA is a substance naturally found in the body that keeps the skin hydrated and plump, but tends to diminish with age. As a result of its depletion, skin loses volume.

HA Fillers work to restore lost volume by adding product to the treatment area. HA fillers are commonly used to plump lips, smooth lines, and contour features.

However, their effects typically last 6–12 months, and they do not stimulate collagen in the same way PLLA does.

CaHA (calcium hydroxylapatite)

This is the ingredient in Radiesse, another type of biostimulatory filler. Like PLLA, CaHA is biocompatible and biodegradable, but its particle structure is different.

CaHA microspheres are suspended in a gel carrier, providing immediate volume upon injection while also stimulating your body’s natural collagen production over time.

Radiesse is commonly used to treat deeper folds and volume loss in areas like the lower face, jawline, and hands.

Results can last 12–18 months, depending on the treatment area and individual metabolism.

Unlike HA fillers, CaHA not only fills but also improves skin quality over time. As such, it’s more comparable to Sculptra in its regenerative qualities.

Think of it like comparing apples and oranges — each option has its own strengths, and the best choice depends on your unique goals, timeline, and facial anatomy.

Sculptra Filler is ideal if you’re looking for a gradual, long-lasting transformation that works by stimulating your skin’s own collagen production.

It’s not about instant results, but about restoring structure, firmness, and volume from within over time.

HA Fillers (like Juvederm or Restylane)are perfect if you want immediate, targeted volume — especially in areas like the lips, nasolabial folds, or under-eyes.

They’re versatile and reversible, which makes them a great option for first-timers or those with short-term goals.

CaHA Fillers (like Radiesse) offer a combination of both: immediate lift and long-term collagen stimulation.

They’re often used in the lower face and hands for a more sculpted, defined look.

In short, no one filler is “better” across the board — it’s about what’s best for you. During your consultation, we’ll help you decide which approach aligns with your treatment goals and desired outcome.

Yes. For synergistic rejuvenation, Sculptra is often combined with Botox neuromodulators, Ultherapy Skin Tightening and RF microneedling.

Sculptra side effects are typically mild with swelling or bruising possibly occurring and typically resolving  within a few days.

Nodules are rare when proper technique and massage are followed.

Sculptra is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it doesn’t typically come with extensive downtime or recovery, particularly compared to surgical options, such as a facelift or lower facelift.

Patients typically return to normal activity following their session.

Pain level is typically similar to any injection. It’s important to note that pain tolerances are individual and can be alleviate with the use of Pro Nox or BLT analgesic cream during treatment.

Massage of the treated area is recommended to ensure even distribution of the product and to prevent lumps.

Follow our signature 5‑5‑5 massage protocol: 5 minutes, 5 times daily, over 5 days, to optimize outcome and keep nodules from developing under the skin.

Avoid NSAIDs, supplements like fish oil, alcohol for 1-2 days before and after treatment.

Following your treatment, you should refrain from strenuous activity for 1–2 days.

Choosing the right injector matters: Sculptra injections are NOT reversible. Additionally, this procedure requires precision in dilution, placement, and massage to avoid nodules, as well as to ensure smooth, natural results.

Look for an experienced injector. With the high volume of treatments in a big city like Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, it’s completely possible to find a seasoned provider with extensive knowledge of injectables such as Botox, Dermal Fillers and PLLA collagen stimulators.

With so many filler options available, it’s important to see an experienced doctor, who:

  • Has knowledge about how different formulations work for particular skincare concern
  • Takes your individual anatomy and extent of aging into consideration
  • Has expertise about where to inject product to get the filler results you’re looking for
  • Knows how much product to be injected to achieve natural results.
  • Can advise the right maintenance schedule to extend these results.

Our Medical Director and Master Injector, George Liakeas, MD ticks all these boxes. He’s been using Botox, Fillers and other Cosmetic Injectables for 20 plus years.

At Smooth Synergy®, our Medical Director Dr. George Liakeas uses an optimized Sculptra protocol — careful injection technique, custom dilution, and expert post-care — to maximize safety and deliver results

  • Personalized treatment planning based on facial anatomy and aesthetic goals

Dr. Liakeas has a knack for understanding the face and knowing where to place injectables to make you look your best. He’s known for achieving natural-looking, youthful results without a “frozen” appearance.

Sculptra cost / pricing is based on per vial or syringe used during treatment.

How many syringes of filler depends on the treatment area, as well as the client’s desired outcome. For example,

  • Your body and goals determine how many vials are needed.

    • Sculptra face treatments often require 1‑2 vials per session, with total treatment typically requiring 2 to 4 vials spread across multiple sessions

  • Larger areas, like body contouring or a Sculptra Butt Lift / BBL, may require 6–20 vials per session

It’s also important to note that Sculptra results tend to be more long-lasting when compared to other dermal fillers.  While Sculptra is more expensive upfront, fewer maintenance sessions can make it a more cost-effective option in the long run
