All Juvederm fillers make use of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule in the body that nourishes and hydrates the skin. As we age, our bodies produce less Hyaluronic Acid.

Fillers replensh this lost HA, in order to hydrate, plump and restore the skin.

Specifically, Juvederm Volbella is the thinnest formulation of Juvederm Vycross filler family (including Voluma and Vollure).

Allergan offers two product lines of Juvederm HA fillers. These are both used as anti-aging agents for the face, as well as for lip augmentation. 

The newest line of HA fillers includes Vollure, Voluma and Volbella. It’s predecessor consists of Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC.

The difference is in the size of the molecules of Hyaluronic Acid in their respective formulations. Specifically, Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC offer a Hyaluronic Acid in a single consistency and uniform molecular weight. (Allergan refers to this formulation as Hylacross technology).

On the other hand, Juvederm Voluma, Volbella and Vollure use Vycross technology, which offers different sizes of HA molecules. 

As a result, Vycross fillers typically–

• Last longer than Hylacross

• Don’t cause as much swelling

• Can give a more powerful lift (thicker formulations: Voluma)

• Made softer for sensitive areas like the lips or eyelids (thinner formulations: Volbella)

Volbella is the thinnest formulation in the Vycross family of products. It’s specific molecular weight  makes it highly effective for application near the surface of the skin (eg on the mouth) or for filing smaller areas (eg under the eyes).

It’s soft, flexible gel formulation is designed to blend seamlessly into delicate skin, providing natural-looking results without puffiness or heaviness. Let’s drill down further:

A Juvederm Volbella filler injection is actually quite simple and usually takes between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment area.

Our Medical Director, Dr. George, MD,  will evaluate your face and mark strategic injection points.

Using a super-fine needle, he will inject the Volbella at various predetermined sites along the treatment area.

Finally, he will evaluate the treatment area to assess whether additional filler is needed to assure maximum benefit to the skin. 

Juvederm Volbella XC comes with lidocaine, which makes treatment more comfortable.

Typically, filler pain is minimal; however, the lip area has a tendency to be more sensitive. Therefore, we typically recommend choosing product with lidocaine for lip procedures.

That said, we do know that individual pain tolerances vary.

Filler post treatment is fairly straightforward, and bad results are rare. Because cosmetic fillers are minimally invasive, they are safe and effective alternatives to plastic surgery.

Following injection, there’s no downtime and most patients can return to normal activity immediately. However, some patients describe a mild pinching, stinging or burning sensation at the injection site.

It’s advised that intense physical exercise be avoided for 24-48 hours, in order to minimize swelling.

Some patients experience mild and temporary swelling, bruising, numbness, tenderness or redness, which usually dissipates within a few hours to a few days. Topical icing is recommended to alleviate these symptoms. 

You will notice a subtle, instant plumping of the lips and a reversal of fine lines and wrinkles on or around the mouth following injection.

However, it can take up to a week to see full correction. Once it’s reached full correction, a Juvederm Volbella injection can last up to 18 months. At this point, a maintenance session is required to maintain results.
