FDA-Approved Juvederm Voluma is an injectable filler that’s specifically formulated for restoring mid-face volume. It makes use of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule in the body that nourishes and hydrates the skin.

As we age, our bodies produce less Hyaluronic Acid. When our skin lacks this crucial element, the elastin and collagen fibers that support the face lack the nourishment they need to thrive. As a result, the face can develop deep wrinkles, hollows and folds. 

With a fine-needle, Juvederm Voluma is injected into strategic points along the treatment area. As a result, it instantly restores volume loss, in order to impart a youthful appearance.

Fillers replenish the depleted hyaluronic acid to plump up the skin and restore a youthful appearance. Specifically, Juvederm Voluma is highly effective for reclaiming fullness in the cheeks or on the cheekbone. Additionally, with the cheek lifted, the jowls will have additional support and appear tauter. Further, this cheek filler works to restore the coveted V-shape contour of youth. Because of Voluma’s ability to define and lift the cheek area, it’s often considered a great alternative to a facelift or cosmetic surgery.

Allergan offers two product lines of Juvederm HA fillers. These are both used as anti-aging agents for the face, as well as for lip augmentation. The newest line of HA fillers includes Vollure, Voluma and Volbella. It’s predecessor consists of Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC.

The difference is in the size of the molecules of Hyaluronic Acid in their respective formulations. Specifically, Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC offer a Hyaluronic Acid in a single consistency and uniform molecular weight. (Allergan refers to this formulation as Hylacross technology). On the other hand, Juvederm Voluma, Volbella and Vollure use Vycross technology, which offers different sizes of HA molecules. 

As a result, Vycross fillers typically–

• last longer than Hylacross,
• don’t cause as much swelling,
• can give a more powerful lift (thicker formulations: Voluma)
• or made softer, for sensitive areas like the lips or eyelids (thinner formulations Volbella, Vollure)

A Juvederm Voluma cheek filler injection is actually quite simple and usually takes between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment area. Our Medical Director, Dr. George, MD,  will evaluate your face, and mark strategic Voluma injection points. Using a super-fine needle, he will inject the Voluma at various predetermined sites along the treatment area. Finally, he will evaluate the treatment area to assess whether additional filler is needed to assure maximum benefit to the skin. 

Juvederm Voluma post treatment is fairly straightforward, and bad results are rare. Because cosmetic fillers are minimally invasive, they are safe and effective alternatives to plastic surgery. Following injection, there’s no downtime and most patients can return to normal activity immediately. However, some patients describe a mild pinching, stinging or burning sensation at the injection site. It’s advised that intense physical exercise be avoided for 24-48 hours, in order to minimize swelling. Some patients experience mild and temporary swelling, bruising, numbness, tenderness or redness, which usually dissipates within a few hours to a few days. Topical icing is recommended to alleviate these symptoms. 

You will notice instant volume in the cheekbone or chin area following a Juvederm Voluma injection. However, it can take up to a week to see full correction. Once it’s reached full correction, a Juvederm Voluma injection can last up to 18 months. However, it’s important to note that individual results vary.
