In general, Dermal fillers make use of an injection beneath the skin to either replenish lost volume or spark collagen or both.

As we age, our bodies produce less of it. As a result, the elastin and collagen fibers that support the face aren’t properly nourished. This causes the scaffold of connective tissue underneath the skin to thin and weaken. Additionally, we lose fat and bone in the face.

As a result of this combination happening underneath the skin, aging appears on the surface of the skin. Specifically for the cheeks, we develop:

• Cheek hollows,
• Less defined cheekbones, 
• Sagging skin from the mid-face into the jowl, as well as
• Deep wrinkles and folds.

How a dermal filler works depend on it’s active ingredient as follows:

Hyaluronic Cheek Fillers:

A naturally-occurring molecule in the body,  Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is designed to hydrate and nourish the skin. By replenishing lost HA, a cosmetic dermal filler will lift, firm and fill the skin. HA fillers provide immediate volume and are reversible.

Radiesse for Cheeks (Calcium Hydroxylapatite – CaHA):

Calcium Hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound naturally found in bone. As a dermal filler, CaHA provides immediate structural support while also stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. It is thicker than HA fillers and is typically used for deeper lines and restoring facial volume.

Sculptra Filler (Poly-L-lactic Acid – PLLA):

Poly-L-lactic Acid is a biostimulatory compound that works by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra does not provide immediate volume correction. Instead, results develop gradually over several weeks as collagen rebuilds, making it ideal for overall facial rejuvenation and long-term volume restoration.

As we said above, there are three different types of fillers for cheeks that provide excellent results: Let’s drill down further on each:

HA Cheek Fillers:

The three main makers of cosmetic fillers are Juvederm (Allergan), Restylane (Galderma) and Belotero (Merz). They all offer a complete line of dermal fillers that are each designed to be effective for a different region of the face.

Specifically for the cheeks, we would always choose a formulation that provides a sturdy structure to the cheek area. 

Therefore, we’re looking for a cheek filler that has a higher weight and viscosity of HA molecules. The thickest formulations from each maker are:

• • Juvederm Voluma or Juvederm Voluma XC
  • Restylane Lyft and
  • Belotero Volume

Radiesse Cheek Filler:

Radiesse is a Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler that is particularly well-suited for cheek enhancement and midface volume restoration. Because it is thicker and more structurally supportive than most HA fillers, it provides immediate lift and contour to the cheekbones.

In addition to instant volume, Radiesse stimulates natural collagen production over time. This makes it an excellent option for patients experiencing moderate to significant age-related volume loss who need both structure and long-term support in the midface. By restoring cheek projection, Radiesse can also indirectly soften nasolabial folds and improve lower face sagging.

Sculptra Cheek Filler:

Sculptra is a Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA) biostimulatory filler designed to gradually rebuild collagen in the cheeks and midface. Rather than acting as a traditional “space-filling” product, Sculptra works over time to restore facial structure from within.

Because cheek volume loss is often the root cause of sagging and deep folds, Sculptra is ideal for global midface rejuvenation. Results develop gradually over several weeks and typically require a series of treatments. The benefit is long-lasting, natural-looking cheek fullness that can also improve nasolabial folds and overall facial balance.

These three represent our go-to  types of cheek fillers. However, it’s important to note that there are other fillers that might be right for you. In consultation with our on-site doctor, you can discuss your skincare concern and he will make a recommendation about what cheek filler (or other treatment) is best to address it and give you the results you’re looking for.

You will notice instant volume in the cheek and mid-face area following an injection with an HA and Radiesse cheek filler. However, it can take up to a week to see full correction.

Sculptra results develop gradually over a period of several weeks and following multiple sessions.

Once a filler has reached full correction, it can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the formulation.

However, these results for cheeks depend on the individual filler, the quality of your skin to begin with, as well as your desired treatment outcomes.

It’s important to note that Sculptra, as well as the Voluma, Vollure, Volbella line from Juvederm, are the only filler lines that offer results that last up to two years. Radiesse typically lasts up to a year.

You may be surprised that we can use Cheek Fillers for sagging jowls. Here’s how Cheek Filler works: Specifically, the cheekbones act like a scaffold, allowing skin to hang smoothly from the cheek area to the chin and jowl area.

As we age, the cheeks lose bone and soft tissue and collagen and elastin production diminishes. As a result of this loss, the cheeks no longer hold the skin in place.

Thus, this area starts to droop and sag. Depending on the individual, this process can make loose, sagging jowls and/or deep creases and folds around the nose and/or mouth.

So, yes, cheek filler will add definition to the midface, which will then lift the jawline and restore the skin in this area.

Specifically, by correcting the cheeks with an HA, PLLA, or CaHa filler, we can get rid of saggy jowls, as well as restore the coveted “inverted triangle of youth”.
