A chemical facial peel is a professional skin resurfacing treatment that uses a chemical solution to exfoliate the top layers of the skin.
This controlled peeling process helps to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and stimulate cellular renewal.
By dissolving the dull, damaged outer layer, a peel reveals smoother, fresher skin underneath and allows healthier skin to surface.
Chemical peels can vary in strength—superficial, medium, or deep—and are carefully selected based on your skin type, tone, and specific concerns.
Whether you’re treating the face, neck, chest, or hands, chemical peels offer great versatility.
Thanks to a wide range of formulations—including glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, mandelic acid, and TCA (trichloroacetic acid)—peels can be tailored to suit your skin type, tone, and specific concerns, offering customizable depth and intensity for truly personalized results.
Performed by trained professionals, facial peels are a safe and non-invasive way to enhance skin clarity, refresh your complexion, and stimulate long-term collagen production—making them a trusted choice in both cosmetic and clinical skincare.
The exfoliating effect of a chemical peel makes it highly effective for improving the overall texture and tone of the skin.
By removing dead skin cells, it can work for many skin concerns, including freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, melasma, and skin imperfections caused by hormonal changes, aging, or photodamage.
Further, peels can aid in cellular turnover and promote collagen production.
As a result, they are a great addition to an anti-aging skincare regimen.
Facial Chemical Peels are incredibly versatile. Basically, there’s pretty much a peel formulation for most skin concern and beauty goals.
A properly formulated chemical peel can work for so many general skincare concerns to:

Offering different facial peels allows our estheticians to customize each treatment to meet the individual skincare concerns of each client.
Chemical peels differ in a variety of ways:
- Acid Solution — Each peel takes advantage of a different acid as its active ingredient. Salicylic, glycolic, lactic, or pyruvic acid are a few examples. Each provides different benefits for the skin.
- Acid Concentration — Each formulation will peel to different depths of the skin. It all depends on the percentage of acid in the peel’s concentration. Peels are generally classified as light, medium or deep, depending on their percentage of acid.
- Mechanism of Action — Facial peels differ in the way in which they lift off skin. While some peels lift off deep skin in a layer (called sheet peeling), others work by flaking off the skin.

Speak to one of our experts in beauty to find out which chemical peel and what acid concentration is right for you.
At Smooth Synergy®, we tailor every peel using a blend of professional-grade acids chosen for your specific skin goals. Most peels fall into two main categories — AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) — each offering unique benefits for skin renewal.
AHAs: Surface Smoothers
AHAs are water-soluble exfoliants derived from natural sources like fruit, sugar, and milk. They work primarily on the skin’s surface, gently dissolving dead cells to reveal a brighter, more even complexion.
Common AHAs include:
Glycolic Acid: Improves texture, minimizes fine lines, and promotes collagen renewal.
Lactic Acid: Hydrates and refines dull, dry, or sensitive skin.
Mandelic Acid: A milder AHA ideal for redness-prone or darker skin tones, offering gentle brightening without irritation.
AHAs are best suited for dry, sun-damaged, or uneven skin that needs smoother texture and enhanced luminosity.
BHAs: Deep Clarifiers
BHAs are oil-soluble, meaning they can penetrate deeper into pores to break down excess sebum and unclog congestion.
The most common BHA is:
Salicylic Acid: Reduces acne, blackheads, and inflammation while refining pores and improving clarity.
BHAs are ideal for oily, acne-prone, or combination skin, as they help control breakouts and balance oil production.
Custom Blends for Balanced Renewal
Many of our peels combine AHA and BHA acids to target multiple layers of the skin — achieving both surface renewal and deeper clarity. Our estheticians carefully adjust formulations to ensure every treatment is effective, balanced, and suited to your skin’s sensitivity and tone.
Yes, the depth of the peel depends on your skin type, goals and skin concerns:
Light Chemical Peel: Gently refreshes the surface layer of skin to smooth texture, reduce acne, and brighten uneven tone. Ideal for mild rejuvenation and can be repeated every monthly for ongoing glow.
Medium Chemical Peel: Targets both the outer and upper middle layers of skin to minimize fine lines, acne scars, and pigmentation. Offers more dramatic renewal with minimal downtime.
Deep Chemical Peel: Reaches the deeper layers of skin to smooth pronounced wrinkles, lift stubborn discoloration, and refine overall texture. Results are long-lasting and typically require only one treatment.
Because every complexion is different, sensitive skin types often benefit most from lighter peels, while daker skin tones require careful selection of peel depth and formulation to ensure safe, even results without irritation or side effects like Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
The way a peel exfoliates skin depends depth, formulation, and your individual skin response, including:
Flaking Peels: Dead skin gradually flakes off over several days, revealing smoother, brighter skin. These are the most common for light to medium peels.
Sheet Peeling: The outer layer of skin peels off in larger sheets, usually with medium to deep peels. Typically, more dramatic results are achieved with a longer recovery.
No-Peel / Biostimulating Peels: Skin remains intact with no visible peeling. Instead, the peel stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, giving rejuvenation, improved texture, and radiance with minimal downtime. Common with Biostimulators such as BioRePeel or PRX-T33.
No Peeling at All: Some people just don’t peel following their treatment. It doesn’t mean the peel isn’t working. Each individual’s peeling process is individual. For example, if your skin is well exfoliated before your peel, you may not experience any peeling. It doesn’t mean that the peel isn’t working to restore your skin to health.
If you’re targeting a specific concern like hyperpigmentation or acne scarring, we recommend coming in for a facial peel once a month.
For general skin maintenance and to maintain healthy skin, an appointment for a peel can be scheduled once every few months.
You can return to normal activity after a facial peel. Generally, skin will not appear red.
However, your face will look better in ten days than it does right immediately following the peel.
Depending on the peel, you may have flaking or layer flaking two to three days following treatment. That’s why it’s best to avoid the gym until the peeling process begins.
Further, do not wear makeup or use mineral makeup (no oil, no talc, doesn’t clog pores).
And, lastly, try a mineral sheer tint from the private label of Nicole Contos, Owner and CEO of Smooth Synergy®.
We invite our clients to consider the perfect synergy between a chemical peel and one of our customized facials.
A facial will assure you start with a clean slate for a chemical peel to work most effectively on the skin.
Smooth Synergy® Owner, Nicole Contos, offers a brightening peel, which is a take-home peel.
It’s a brightening pad that gives you a radiant glow, for an all-around shine and freshness.
