What are the Different Types of Facial Fillers?

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally-occuring substance in the body. It’s responsible for keeping the skin plump and hydrated. As we age, our bodies produce less Hyaluronic Acid. Without enough of this nourishing element, elastin and collagen fibers struggle to provide support for the face. This results in wrinkles, sagging skin, hollows and folds.
An HA filler is a soft, gel-like substance that’s injected into the skin, in order to replenish lost hyaluronic acid. As a result, it can restore a youthful appearance for up to 18 months (depending on the filler and at full-correction).
You may have noticed above that Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero offer multiple formulations. Each family of products varies by its molecular makeup. Like Hyaluronic Acid, Calcium Hydroxylapatite is a naturally occurring molecule. While HA is typically found in connective tissue, Calcium Hydroxylapatite is typically found in bone.
As a filler formulation, the calcium particles are suspended in a gel-like substance that’s thicker than HA fillers. Because of its similarities to bone and thicker structure, it’s typically used to restore extreme volume loss, as well as fill in deeper lines and wrinkles for up to 12 months (at full correction).
Poly-L-lactic Acid
Brand: Sculptra
Poly-L-lactic acid is a synthetic substance that’s biocompatible with the body. It has a long history of medical use, including in dissolvable stitches.
As a cosmetic filler, its mechanism of action differs from HA fillers and Calcium Hydroxylapatite. These two fillers produce results quickly and are designed to stay under the skin until they are reabsorbed by the body. On the other hand, Poly-L-lactic acid is known as a “collagen stimulator”. It’s designed to dissolve a few days after treatment. Then, it begins a gradual process of boosting collagen production. Patients typically undergo multiple injections before seeing results. Because of it’s thicker structure, it’s generally indicated for restoring lower face volume, which can last for two years or more (at full correction).
