Tear Trough Filler FAQs

A Tear Trough treatment makes use of  Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler to instantly fill or smooth the area under the eye. This naturally occurring substance in the body is injected under the eye, in order to restore a refreshed, more youthful appearance.

As we age, our bodies produce less Hyaluronic Acid. As a result, our collagen and elastin fibers lack hydration and nourishment. This causes the tissues underneath the skin to thin and provide less support for the face. By replenishing to the depleted HA, volume is restored. Specifically, the under eye area will fill in and appear smoother.

The tear trough is a natural contour that exists between the under eye area and the top of the cheek bone. Some people’s tear troughs are naturally bigger or appear more hollow than others. Additionally, as we age, the tear trough can become deeper or more prominent. Specifically, our skin becomes thinner and we lose fat and volume underneath the skin. As a result, these visible signs of aging can occur:

  • If the tear trough appears sunken, we can look perpetually tired, sullen or unwell.
  • When the tear trough is either too deep or covers a large area, it can look like we have dark circles under our eyes.
  • Volume loss around the fatty pads under the eyes can make our under eye area appear to bulge. Additionally, eye bags can appear more prominent.

A Tear Trough Treatment will instantly restore volume loss under the eye. Specifically, a dermal filler can:

  • Firm the under eye plane, so it appears less concave or sunken
  • Smooth the under eye plane, so that less shadows are cast and eyes appear brighter
  • Fill in the area around the fat pads, so under eye bags appear less prominent

The procedure is simple and usually takes between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment area. Our Medical Director, Dr. George, MD,  will evaluate your face, and mark strategic injection points for placement. Using a super-fine needle, he will inject along these predetermined sites. Finally, he will evaluate the treatment area to assess whether additional filler is needed to assure maximum benefit to the skin.

Although, cosmetic fillers provide instant results, they are not permanent and require a maintenance regime. How long each dermal filler lasts depends on the filler. Typical results are between 6-18 months.

Many of our clients come in concerned about how much pain filler treatment will cause. This is particularly true of the under eye area, which can be thin and sensitive. Rest assured that our expert medical injector, Dr. George Liakeas, is trained and experienced in how to inject product quickly and easily. Additionally, it is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your he may anesthetize the treatment area with a numbing cream. Additionally, there are fillers that contain a numbing ingredient, such as Lidocaine.

Because cosmetic fillers are minimally invasive, they are a safe and effective alternative to plastic surgery. Following injection, there’s no downtime, and severe after effects are uncommon. Most patients can return to normal activity immediately. Bruising, redness and/or swelling at the injection site is possible, yet, typically, minimal if at all.  These effects generally resolve within a few days.

Cosmetic fillers have a decades long track record of safety on millions of patients. Specifically, they are biocompatible, which virtually eliminates the risk of allergic reaction. Additionally, adverse effects are rare.

That said, it’s important to note that Tear Trough treatment is an off-label use for dermal fillers. There can be concern about the safety of an injection so close to the eye. This is why it’s extremely important to make sure the doctor is properly vetted, which includes assuring that he or she has the medical expertise and experience to safely and properly administer injectables.

There’s an arsenal of specialized fillers available today. That’s why it’s so important to find a physician with medical training, knowledge of facial anatomy and a keen eye for aesthetics to perform your treatment. It’s the best way to assure you get a safe, effective and personalized treatment.
