We know it when we see it: dimples on the bum, inner thigh fat pockets, cottage cheese upper thighs. It’s largely genetic with up to 90% of women suffering from cellulite on at least one area of the body, compared with only 10% of men. Weight gain and aging can make it worse. 

But why does it happen in the first place? Simply put, cellulite dimples are the result of fat pushing through the superficial bands within the skin. More specifically, fat cells grow together separated by thick bands of collagen called septae. These bands of connective tissue hold the fat in compartments and tether the skin to its deeper structures. With cellulite, the fat is ballooning up over these fibrous cords and protruding through the surface in a lumpy, bumpy skin texture. A good illustration is to think about how ice freezes in an overfilled ice cube tray. The bulging ice represents cellulite; while the rigid tray compartments are the connective tissue. The result? Visible pockets of fat appear on  the surface level of the skin. 

QWO is the first and only cosmetic injectable specifically designed to permanently get rid of cellulite. It does so by targeting the septae described above. In a nutshell, by breaking down these fibrous septae, it distributes the fat more evenly. Specifically, collagen is what makes the septae rigid. QWO contains two different active enzymes – AUX-1 and AUX-11 – that work to break down the collagen. Once the collagen is relaxed, the fat is no longer held tight in compartments and the skin smooths out under the surface of the body. 

QWO is formally known as collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes, The Makers of QWO, Endo Aesthetics in Malvern, PA, gained  FDA-approval for QWO in July of 2020, making it the first injectable treatment for the permanent removal of cellulite in the buttocks. It’s important to note that Endo International undertook the largest clinical trial phase in the history of cellulite treatments, in their effort to gain FDA approval. 

QWO injectable treatment is fairly simple, taking 30 minutes to an hour. Clients may opt for topical numbing cream at the injection site. Then, Dr. Liakeas will use a fine needle to inject QWO at predetermined sites along the treatment area. 

We typically see permanent cellulite reduction in as little as three sessions, although individual results will vary based on the quality of the skin to begin with. 

In clinical studies, QWO showed lasting reduction of cellulite after three sessions. Specifically, skin appeared visibly smoother with a reduction of dimpling at the treatment area.

A course of treatment is typically three sessions spaced three week apart, although individual treatment schedules may vary.

The majority of clients experience minimal discomfort and require no downtime or anesthesia and minimal side effects. Though individual pain tolerances vary, most clients find QWO less painful than Botox injectable or dermal fillers. Following treatment, clients are free to resume normal activity. Side effects, such as swelling, soreness or bruising at the injection site, are normal and should resolve within a few days. Like most cosmetic injectables, QWO is priced by units. Therefore, how much QWO  costs depends on each individual’s beauty goals, the quality of the skin to begin with, as well as the extent of the treatment area. For example, the QWO cost for two areas (say butt and thighs)  will be more than the QWO price for one area. Additionally, a larger amount of cellulite dimples in a single area will require more units.
