PRF vs PRP | What’s the Difference? Which is Better for Hair? For Under Eyes? For Face? For Sexual Rejuvenation?

Platelet-Rich Plasma has long been considered a top treatment for non-surgical aesthetic rejuvenation. Case in point, we all know and love PRP facial rejuvenation, PRP for hair loss and PRP for sexual rejuvenation. Now, there’s a new player that’s, quite possibly, even more remarkable. Called Platelet-Rich Fibrin or PRF, it’s very similar to PRP but with a few important differences. So which is better for you? PRF or PRP? Here’s all you need to know about PRF vs PRP, courtesy of the best medspa in NYC:

PRF vs PRP? What Are The Similarities?

Before we talk about the differences between PRF and PRP, let’s talk about their similarities. Both are:

  • Nonsurgical: Both PRF and PRP are known for their safety profile, minimal downtime, as well as typically mild side effects.

  • Blood-based: Both PRP and PRF rely on a blood draw from the patient, in order to source protein-rich material for nonsurgical tissue rejuvenation.

  • Platelet-based: Both make use of the platelets within the blood.

  • Rich in Healing Factors: Within these platelets are special protein-rich materials that are known for their regenerative power.

  • Spun with a Centrifuge: These protein-rich parts of the blood are both extracted and concentrated by placing the blood in a centrifuge and spinning it.

  • Administered Through Injection and/or Microneedling: This spun concentration of healing factors is what becomes the PRP or PRF injectable serum. This is, then, injected or microneedled at strategic points along the treatment area.

  • Effective on the Surface and Deeper Layers of the Skin: Natural healing factors spark the body’s own ability to regenerate itself. As a result, both work at the cellular level to repair the skin from the inside out.

  • Versatile and Can Be Used on the Same Areas, Including:
    • Face, including full face, forehead, cheeks, jowls, jawline, lips and under eyes
    • Body, including chest, neck, breast, arms and thighs
    • Hair treatment for hair regrowth
    • Sexual rejuvenation for both men and women

  • Renowned for Skin Rejuvenation on the Face and Body: Both PRF and PRP inject or miconeedle powerful healing factors that can:
    • Smooth fine lines and wrinkles
    • Restore an even skin tone and texture
    • Remove excess pigment (hyperpigmentation / age spots / dark marks)
    • Diminish scars caused by acne, trauma, surgery or burns
    • Boost collagen production
    • Impart a healthy, youthful glow

What’s the Difference between PRF and PRP? Which is Superior?

In a nutshell, the difference between PRP and PRF comes down to:

  • The Centrifuge Process: PRF and PRP differ in how the growth factors are extracted from the blood.

  • What Each Serum Contains: The differing centrifuge process allows for different material to be collected for each serum.

  • Different Concentrations: Different amounts of healing factors are contained in each serum. Again, this is due to the differing centrifuge process.

Let’s drill down further on these three elements.

PRF vs PRP: The Centrifuge Process

The PRF Centrifuge spins at a lower speed than the PRP centrifuge. As a result, different materials are collected at different concentrations. Additionally, the slower rate of speed of the PRF centrifuge typically causes less damage to the blood cells.

PRP vs PRF: What the Collected Serum Contains

While both PRP and PRF contain powerful growth factors and proteins, PRF contains more. Specifically, PRF is also made up of white blood cells and regenerative stem cells, while PRP isn’t. Again, the difference is due to the slower rate of speed of the PRF centrifuge.

PRF vs PRP: Different Concentrations of Materials

PRF contains a higher concentration of proteins than PRP. For example, the proteins in a PRP serum are typically concentrated at 4X that of our own blood. On the other hand, PRF’s concentration is typically 10X our own blood.

PRF or PRP? Which is Better? What’s the Difference Before and After Treatment? What Results Can I Expect?

In essence, PRP and PRF create similar results for face, body, hair loss and sexual rejuvenation. However, PRF just does it better. It all comes down to its ability to source white blood cells and stem cells, which PRP can’t. Additionally, PRF contains a higher concentration of powerful proteins than PRP. That said, we always recommend a complimentary consultation with an Expert in Beauty at Smooth Synergy. Put simply, your individual skincare needs should always factor into what treatment’s best for you.
