How To Reduce the Masseter Muscle with Botox

Conventional wisdom has it that strong muscles keep us fit and healthy. However, there’s one muscle in the body that can become too prominent and cause problems when it’s overworked: the masseter muscle. Here’s all you need to know about Masseter Botox Jaw Reduction to soften a strong or square jaw:

What is the Masseter Muscle? Is There a Non Surgical Jaw Reduction Option?

Found on each side of the face near the jawline, the masseter muscle is responsible for helping us chew our food (along with the Temporalis and Pterygoid Muscles). When it’s used too often, it can become too big and strong. As a result, all kinds of issues can occur. People can suffer from Bruxism (fancy term for teeth grinding), jaw clenching,  Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ and/or a loss of the coveted V shape of the face. In addition to overwork of the masseter muscle, some people have a genetic predisposition to a square jawline or round “baby” face. Specifically, up to 20% of the Southeast Asian population has masseter hypertrophy or square jaw syndrome. Interestingly, Botox jaw reduction was first done there in 1994.

How Does Jaw Botox Work for Face Slimming?

The same mechanism that makes Botox so great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles also makes it highly effective for slimming a square jawline or a round face. Botox or Botulinum Neurotoxin temporarily blocks the nerve impulses to the muscle of the treatment area. As a result, this weakens the muscle’s ability to contract, When a Botox injection is placed in the masseter muscle, it works to relax the jaw and allows the muscle to soften. This causes the face to appear slimmer and a V-Shaped contour is revealed.

Bethenny Frankel before Jaw Reduction

Bethenny Frankel is a Proponent of Botox Jaw Reduction

She was candid about her softer look in a 2016 Daily Mail article, saying, “ “I do look different. I’ve had Botox in my jaw. You can see that my jaw has completely changed.”  She states that she began getting Botox jaw injections in 2013 at the suggestion of her dermatologist for teeth grinding. She had been wearing a night guard for eight years to alleviate the problem, but her jaw was still tense, adding “because it’s like a muscle, it’s like working out with weights. My jaw from grinding so many years was like this [closed fist].”

Botox and Masseter Injection Points — How to Inject Botox into Masseter Muscle?

Botox injections for masseter reduction have the advantage of being particularly quick and easy. It can usually be done in five minutes with botox injected at several injection points on each side of the face to soften the jawline.

Botox Side Effects: What Can I Expect During Jaw Reduction?

Botox risks, bad results and problems are less common than a cosmetic surgery. Botox is generally considered safe and severe symptoms are rare, particularly when administered in tiny amounts by a licensed professional. However, anytime you get injected, even for the flu shot, you can get minor swelling and bruising, which usually subsides in a few days. Some patients report a sore jaw after treatmemt which usually resolves within a week after treatment.

How Long Does it Take to Slim My Jawline?

The full jaw-reducing, facial softening effect of Botox injections on the masseter muscle will be seen in 2-8 weeks.

Is Botox Permanent? How Long Does Masseter Botox Last?

The treatment is not permanent and requires a maintainence regime. However, it is interesting to note that the Masseter muscle has fewer nerve endings than other areas where Botox is typically injected. What this means is that Botox in the jaw typically lasts longer than Botox for frown lines for Botox for brows. Typically results last 3-6 month; however, it’s best to speak with your physician to schedule a treatment plan that’s right for your individual need and desired  treatment goals.

What’s the Recommended Botox Masseter Dose? How Many Botox Units for the Jaw? How much does Botox in Masseter Cost?

The amount of Botox for jaw reduction and, thus, the cost, depends on each patient’s individual anatomy, as well as desired treatment outcomes. Our recommendation is to determine botox price in consultation with your physician.
