What’s the Difference Between Dysport and Botox?

Are you looking for a great nonsurgical treatment to reduce fine lines and wrinkles? You’ve likely heard that Botox is the best for many top aging concerns. These include frown lines, crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines or the “elevens” (glabellar lines between the eyes). But there are Botox alternatives to consider as well. Our guide, Dysport vs Botox, will give you all you need to know about the difference between Botox and Dysport:

Botox or Dysport? Who are Their Makers?

Allergan received approval for Botox Cosmetic in 2002 to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe wrinkles and lines. In 2009, Medicis received a similar approval for Dysport in the U.S. Before this time, Dysport was widely available in Europe.

Botox and Dysport: How are They Similar?

Yes, Botox and Dysport share these similarities:

  • Active Ingredient: Both Dysport and Botox have the active ingredient botulinum toxin that’s produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria.
  • Mechanism of Action: The injection of product blocks nerve impulses to the muscles. As a result, cosmetic injectables work to diminish wrinkles and expression lines on the face.
  • Safety: Both are FDA-approved and have a long track-record of safety with a low risk of adverse side effects.
  • Little-to-No Downtime: Patients can typically return to normal activity following this “lunch-time” treatment.
  • Effectiveness: Both have a long track-record of working well for wrinkle reduction for the majority of patients.
  • Maintaining Results: They are both temporary solutions for wrinkle reduction, which require a maintenance schedule. To maintain full correction, we usually recommend coming into Smooth Synergy every 4-6 months.

Dysport vs Botox: Are There Differences? Are There Studies?

The difference between brands of cosmetic injectables remains under debate. In a nutshell, no studies have shown conclusively that Dysport or Botox is better in terms of either effectiveness or safety. That said, here’s what’s been studied so far:

  • Onset of Results: Some studies have shown that Dysport has a 2-5 day onset, while Botox has a typical onset of 4-7 days.
  • Spread of Product: Some studies have shown that Dysport diffuses more quickly than Botox. This may have repercussions for different areas of the face. Speak to your practitioner to find out which might be best for your skincare concern.
  • Dosage of Product: Some studies have shown that more units / a higher dose of Dysport is needed for correction than with Botox.
  • Duration of Result: Some studies have shown that Dysport does not last as long as Botox. However, as a rule of thumb, cosmetic injectables last between 4-6 months at full correction.

What is the Price of Cosmetic Injectables? Is There a Difference Between Brands?

Generally speaking, the cost of Dysport and Botox are roughly the same. Specifically, how much Botox or Dysport costs depends on

  • How large the area of correction is,
  • The condition of your skin to begin with, and
  • What outcome you are looking for on your face.

Dysport or Botox: Who’s the Best Botox Injector in NYC?

Ultimately, an experienced medical practitioner is far more important than which cosmetic injectable you choose. Botox mistakes are NOT typically made because of product choice. Rather, they are made by practitioners who are inexperienced in using Botox.  It’s extremely important to find a doctor with a proven track record of using botulinum toxin on many patients.
