Can Botox Be Used for Acne Scars?

More and more clients have been asking us about Botox for Acne Scars. So what’s all the buzz about? There’s some compelling research about Botox and scarring, in general. Basically, it has to do with Botox and the wound healing process. Let’s break it down further:

Is Botox Good for Acne Scars?

Yes and no. Here’s why the answer isn’t so simple. Research has shown that Botox injections can help an acne wound heal quicker and better. As a result, it can lessen the extent to which acne scarring develops in the first place. However, if you’re looking for a solution for acne scars that have already happened, there are other cosmetic options that will work better than Botox Cosmetic. The best treatment for acne scars that have already occcurred is, typically, either dermal fillers or microneedling.

What Causes Depressed Scars?

Two factors influence whether an acne blemish or breakout will leave behind a pitted acne scar (aka atrophic acne scar):

  1. Collagen Loss: When the body does not produce enough collagen to repair the damage caused by an inflamed acne lesion. As a result, it will heal with an indentation in the skin.
  2. Muscle Strain: If the muscles surrounding the wound pulls it apart during the healing process. As a result, the acne mark isn’t allowed to close up fully.

It’s possible for either collagen loss and muscle strain or both to contribute to acne scarring.

How Do Botox Injections for Acne Scars Work?

Botox works on this second factor. By relaxing the local muscle around the acne mark, it stabilizes the wound, which, then, diminishes the strain on the wound and allows it to heal. As a result, Botox can help minimize both the depth and severity of the scarring.

Botox or Fillers for Acne Scars?

Botox works to relax the muscle and promote healing of a wound caused by acne. On the other hand, dermal fillers, like Juvederm or Restylane, reverse collagen loss and fill in a depressed acne scar. As a result, Botox can work during the healing process, while  a dermal filler is better at getting rid of the appearance of an already existing acne scar.
